Where We Meet

Monthly Lecture Series

Public Star Parties

Held at Apache Wash Trailhead, away from city light pollution:

Apache Wash Trailhead
1600 E Sonoran Desert Dr
Phoenix, AZ 85085

Gate closes at 7:00 pm — no entry after that time, though you can exit anytime until 11:00 pm. Parking is paved; restrooms are rustic, with no running water, so bring your own water, snacks, and a chair.

Check each star party on the calendar above for its exact date and time.

What to Bring

  • A red flashlight (preserves night vision — white light is discouraged at star parties)
  • Warm layers — desert nights get cold, even in summer
  • A folding chair for comfortable viewing
  • Your own telescope or binoculars, if you have them — not required, PAS members bring plenty

Star Party Etiquette

A few courtesies, mostly common sense, that keep a star party enjoyable for everyone observing alongside you:

  • Skip white light — use red light, and sparingly. If you must use white light, warn people first.
  • Dim your phone or tablet screen; it's brighter than you think once your eyes adjust.
  • Mind your car — no backup or interior lights near the observing area, and park so you can leave without using your headlights.
  • No telescope? Park a bit farther out so there's room for those hauling heavy gear.
  • Drive slowly to keep the dust down.
  • Never touch someone else's equipment — especially glass optics — without asking first.
  • Watch your step (without a flashlight), and mind any power cords on the ground.
  • Don't litter.
  • New to this? Let the astronomers enjoy the sky rather than monopolizing their time — except at events built specifically for beginners and the public.
  • Give astrophotographers extra space and quiet; a stray light or bump can ruin a long exposure.
  • Keep your voice down — astronomy is a quiet, peaceful hobby.
  • Bringing kids or pets? Keep them quiet and under control, and pets on a leash.
  • Music, if it's welcome at all, is a headphones-only affair for most people's taste.
  • Smokers should stay downwind of both people and telescopes.

Telescope Workshops

Can't find anything in your telescope, or need help picking one out? PAS members run free, public telescope workshops throughout the year.

Special Events

Beyond our regular meetings and star parties, PAS members take part in special trips and events throughout the year — like a private group tour of Lowell Observatory's Richard F. Caris Dark Sky Planetarium in Flagstaff.

School & Scout Group Visits

PAS brings telescopes and presenters to schools, scout troops, and community organizations for hands-on astronomy outreach, through our Star Tours program.
